…Previous church assignment: Full-time missionary
  • I became a principal traveling companion for Pappy. As the needs of the Kingdom took us here and there in the Mission, we enjoyed some memorable times together. Usually in the line of duty, but occasionally in a spirit of divertissement, we went places,1 as tourists and as students of French history and culture. As our Pappy’s kids, how could we not enjoy France and the French people and revel in the chance to learn more about them?

  • Valerie and I took part in missionary zone conferences and member district conferences around the Mission.

  • We helped Pappy run the Mission and the Mission Home and enjoyed our associations with the missionaries, the members, and visiting Church officials. Whatever tasks and errands President Pappy assigned us, we did.

  • We showed off our gorgeous children and imposed on various folks to help care for them. Elder Ricky and the missionaries developed quite a mutual admiration society.

  • At a rather low level of involvement, I maintained contact with Abt Associates and with Metra in Paris.

1I’ve put the bulk of the touristic report in an Appendix to this subsection, reporting our visits (entre autres) to Angers, Biarritz, Blois, Bordeaux, Bourges, Carnac, Chenonceaux, Cherbourg, Chinon, Concarneau, Dieppe, Fontainebleau, Fougères, La Rochelle, Limoges, Loches, Luynes, Madrid, Mont St-Michel, Orléans, Paris, Pau, Plessis-lez-Tours, Poitiers, Reims, Rennes, Rouen, Saint-Côme, Saint-Denis, Saumur, Tours, Versailles and Vitré.

Within the Appendix, an Appendix-to-the-Appendix reports our explorations of our home base, Paris, la Ville Lumière, including la Sainte-Chapelle, le Vert-Galant, le Palais de Chaillot, la Tour Eiffel, Sacré-Coeur, Hôtel des Invalides, l’Avenue des Champs-Élysées, la Place de lÉtoile, la Cathédrale de Notre-Dame, le Panthéon, la Place de la Concorde, l’Opéra, l’Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, and le Palais du Louvre.
