I became a principal traveling companion for Pappy. As the needs of the Kingdom took us here and there in the Mission, we enjoyed some memorable times together and recorded some of them photographically. Much of the time, Valerie stuck close to the Home and to our kids, but sometimes she came with us, particularly when our trips included conferences at which she would speak, and she shared some of our explorations.

Pappy on the Pavés
|
This marvelous little book guided our gastronomic perigrinations. The green Michelin guides helped with some of the tourism. We’d model our routine somewhat on the
free-form vacation trips we’d enjoyed in the 1950s: as meal-time approached, or as appetite became insistent, we’d consult our road map to identify the next village on our route. Then we’d look up the neighborhood in the Root book. Frequently, Mr. Root would recommend both a local specialty and a modest eating place where we might find it.
