Appendix: Loches

Our Grandpa King Henry II Fitz-Empress Plantagenet and his intercontinental celebrity son, our Uncle King Richard I Coeur de Lion Plantagenet built much of the château royal de Loches, back in the 12th century. We’re told that Uncle Richard, who despised his English birthplace (Oxford) preferred to spend as much time as possible here and in his great treasure city of Chinon. In 1194, on his way back from the Third Crusade and an illegal captivity, it took Richard only three hours1 to reclaim Loches by assault from Philippe Auguste of France.2

This view of the ruins of the fortified city from afar may help you understand that there was no way Richard or anybody could ever sneak up on Loches. One apparently didn’t mess around with Uncle Richard…
1Military historians and theorists still argue about this feat.
2Richard’s famously-regrettable brother, our Grandpa King John Lackland had grabbed it when Richard went to the Holy Land. Then Philippe had taken it from him.
