Appendix: Bordeaux

A major hub of Church activity in the French Mission, Bordeaux was a frequent stop in Presidential travels, with or without us. I’ve already shown you the Bordeaux District’s presidency; also some of its handsome youth on stage at District Conference; Mammy addressing a congregation there; and the setup for Mammy’s memorial service. This was probably the same conference in 1967 or early 1968, with Pappy and Mammy in the audience. They also frequently brought distinguished visitors here: my favorite shot of the folks with the Hunters is labeled “Bordeaux.”

On their way to Pau in June, they picked up Bertin Farel, the district president, and his wife Suzanne in Bordeaux, inasmuch as the “histoire” that brought them there was located within his jurisdiction; he stands next to Pappy in the last photo taken in Pau, before the accident.
Wouldn’t want you to think that we neglected the touristic delights of Bordeaux. We remember particularly Chez Dubern, a remarkable restaurant; we walked past the Opera House to get there. From the outside, it looked like a very fancy épicerie—we’d call it a grocery store, except that we have nothing that compares.

We had reservations, and the proprietor greeted us with a smile, walking us around the displays on the rez-de-chaussée (ground floor) and explaining with dignified pride the provenance of each item. We were expected to select the main ingredients of our meal, which he would place on a tray he carried. Then he ushered us to the stairs: the medieval kind, steep, spiral, and narrow, with a rope in lieu of a banister. A bell rang, and Madame (More, next page…)
