Ralstons Return!
Yes, we were peeved in 2004 when Ron got his job with NBC in Los Angeles and removed his family to Orange County, only a year after we and the Ralstons had moved into Chankly together. Not sure when Cyndi decided that she was going to cohabit with old folks and take care of us in what Pappy used to call our “reclining years,” but this déménagement surely looked like a step in the wrong direction.

So, as I’ve complained before, we two old folks rattled around in this big house for thirteen years, while the grandchildren changed from cute little squirts to great big lovely adolescents, and we had to travel, whenever we wished to participate in the wondrous process.

The news business sent Ron all over the world, especially after he joined Fox News as a producer. That would’ve been nicer if all the newsworthy places they sent him hadn’t showed such a strong tendency to be the loci of disasters. That got old, and Chankly started looking good to them, once again. So, Ron severed his ties with the Foxes, and in July of 2017, we welcomed them back into our multigenerational household.

By this time, both Bethany and Lindsay were enrolled as students at the Brigham Young University, and Matthew was perched on the cusp of waning adolescence. So much for grandparental cherishing, spoiling, and guidance in their youth. Shortly after their return, Bethany became engaged to marry Declan Webster, but more about that in a few pages.

Perhaps some excerpts from a long e-mail to “our money guy,” Jeff Bunderson and our “tax guy,” Russ Baird will suffice to illustrate the complexities of this transition, especially given our utter lack of material sophistication. It’s probably not the case that Providence was originally configured to preserve people like us from the terminal consequences of our ignorance, but we’re beyond grateful for the sustaining flow of His interventions.

Jeff and Russ—

Now that the Anderson household has returned to its original Utah configuration, it’s time that I check in with “our money guy” and “our tax guy” to find out whether your respective expertises can help us avoid any pitfalls of which I may be at best only dimly aware.
