January 2017—Summer in Australia
No, I didn’t go to Australia, nor do I expect to, in this life. But our Rebecca and her Mark left the University of California at Santa Cruz in 2016 and set up housekeeping in Canberra, Australia. The National University there made him an offer they weren’t at all inclined to refuse.

…presenting far more details than you’re going to want to dig into. Valerie and Rebecca were at first conspiring in the direction of displacing both of us to the Southern Hemisphere for most of January. But when it became clear that the price of that would run north of $5,000, and that my disabilities would guarantee a thoroughly miserable experience, both ways, we dropped back to Plan B, and Valerie abandoned the mountains, her native land, and me for the duration.

This was her first really long plane ride and also her first extended stay where she’d be deprived of the use of her iPhone and, at first, of her internet connection. But the Krumholz-Andersons were splendid hosts, and she had a grand time.

What about me, I hear you cry? How did her crippled Old Bear manage? Well, I missed her, something fierce, and told her so in several e-mails. Guess she was getting back at me for my trips to Ireland and Germany, back in 1969 and the early ’70s. In spades: her absence was twice my longest. Except for those worthy incidents, we’d really never been apart in half a century.

I didn’t starve: not by a long way. She’d stocked our freezers with plenty of goodies, which I supplemented liberally with crêpes of my own manufacture. I continued my thrice-weekly hydrotherapy, an important aspect of my physical well-being which I’d have had to forego Down Under. And Gus Burbank and Darrell Perry, our faithful Home Teachers, with help from Laura, schlepped me to and from the Temple each Thursday of my Deprivation; so, I survived spiritually as well.

Her absence did leave me without a shoulder to moisten as I dealt in pain and disgust with The Michaelson Scam, about which more in coming pages. I got through that without irreversible damage, except in the realms of finance and self-respect.
