Arlington
Back in Arlington, dear friend Paul Dredge, now Bishop of The One True Ward, invited me to participate in its June 28 Sacrament Meeting.
Timeline In keeping with the theme commemorating the late-June martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith, I read parts of the letter William Wines Phelps wrote to Joseph, begging him to receive him back into Church membership. He’d been kicked out earlier for turning against the Latter-day Saints and the Prophet, who welcomed his repentance and return in some of the noblest language I’ve encountered anywhere.

In Carthage Jail, while awaiting the arrival of the murderers, John Taylor sang “The Stranger” twice a cappella. I did my best to reproduce his performance, but only once, and under much less emotional pressure. The hornpipe version in the official Green Book, to my mind, is both unhistorical and unsingable.
