2003—“Berdoo” Reunion
It was also a joy to find my first Seminary teacher, Charles Eastwood, still among the living and to hear his wisdom once again. I’ve listed him as a neighbor in the indexes, though he belongs equally among Church leaders or teachers. But our families have been fast friends since the Eastwoods first arrived in the “Inland Empire,” when we prefigured “Project 48” in accommodating them at the Sixteenth Street homestead for their first few nights. I’ve mentioned elsewhere in these pages that the Eastwood kids still remember calling me “Witchie” in those days, as one of them reminded me recently in the Bountiful Temple, where, if I recall aright, she was being married to one of the Wardles. But wasn’t my Mammy the original “Mrs Seminary” in San Bernardino? I hear you cry. Yes, indeed, and I was privileged to enroll in her class in the Third Ward meetinghouse for my three years (1955-58) at great Pacific High. But as an Arrowview Junior High ninth grader, I was in Charles’ catchment area. Various generous ward members took turns driving me to the Waterman chapel in the early morning.

V Dennis Wardle 		Charles was later a bishop in San Bernardino and, most recently, a successor to our Pappy as Stake Patriarch.

It was only this past January (2020) that we received word that Charles had preceded us to the better world, and Brent and I gathered with his family in Salt Lake on the 13th, when they buried him.

And, speaking of the Wardles, I was glad to strike the hand of fellowship again with one of my early employers, V Dennis Wardle. Through his kindly offices, I was employed by San Bernardino County in a clerical capacity in the Marshal’s Office during one of my college summers. Dennis was for very many years the County Clerk. In those days, of course, ours was the largest county in the land, in point of area.
