2002: Acton
Treasure Cities
Our fifth great-grandfather, Oliver Wheeler II of Acton, wore a sword at Concord Bridge. That, all by itself, would make the Town of Acton, to the west of Concord and Carlisle, one of our Treasure Cities.

Main Street in Acton is Route 27, a busy state highway. About two and a half miles north of Acton Centre, just past the barely-discernible village of North Acton, Main Street crosses the old railroad and enters our ancestral neighborhood. Wheeler Lane, a cul-de-sac, runs to the right. The house at 12 Wheeler Lane appears to be a genuine family item.

The sign to the left of the red front door says “1735 By Samuel Wheeler.” We have an eighth great-uncle Samuel Wheeler (born 1686/87 in Lancaster, died 1781 in Acton), housewright, brother to seventh great-grandfather Jonathan Wheeler, who was grandfather to Oliver II. Eighth great-grandfather Abraham Wheeler (1659-95), the father of Samuel and Jonathan, is also listed as a housewright in Acton. P0002725sign
Having identified Wheeler Lane on the map, I approached on Hepzibah and found the current householder working in her garden. She kindly showed me around and commented on some picturesque cellar-holes in her neighborhood. Once upon a time, I had notes on her comments and also her name; when I find them, d.v., I’ll revisit this part of the story. Some details appear already in the Carlisle Section.
