Church: Ward Choir Director
…previous Church assignment: Ward Music Coordinator
As a freshman, I’d routinely come to Longfellow Park an hour early for Sacrament Meeting each Sunday evening, so as to take part in the Cambridge Branch Choir, under the leadership of several talented and diligent choir directors. Bob Wrathall and Ray Soller and I came quite regularly from East Campus, by MTA or bicycle, and rejoiced in that fellowship and in the musical experience.
When Valerie and I returned together to Cambridge, it was our privilege to sing in the Ward Choir under Clayne Robison, whose operatic-quality baritone inspired us and whose selection of music for our services ranged somewhat more widely than might have been customary and which contributed signally to our joy and our education.

Twenty-eight years later, old friend Nancy Dredge succeeded me as Arlington Ward Music Coordinator and, somewhat curiously, became therefore at the same time my boss: I did indeed cheerfully function under her direction, and we did some delightful and, I believe, suitably-worshipful work together.

Please note, if you hadn’t already been aware, that Church service, as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints implements it, combines hierarchical structure and authority with, in principle, no notion of promotion or demotion in rank. I’d had a lot of authority as branch president, but it was in no sense a come-down or a demotion to hold next the exalted status of assistant nursery coordinator. As I’ve noted, indeed, the change came as a merciful decompression, given the family stresses I was then laboring under.

*In 2020, Wikipedia says: “Clayne Robison is a professor of voice at Southern Virginia University. He previously served as the director of the Brigham Young University opera program. He is a specialist in the study of vocal beauty. ”
