Christy Sorenson was still a Lutheran in good standing when she led us in the Class Hymn.
Not to harp on the subtleties of the Latter-day Saint connection with this lovely, heavily-Protestant worship service, but you can just barely make out the motto behind Christy’s head: |
“Intelligence: the Glory of God”
|
Not sure who suggested it among the “Mormon” kids in our class; we had several who must have delighted in the slightly-oblique reference to the Doctrine and Covenants. Obscure enough, though, to raise no discernible ruckus among the “Gentile” majority.
|
I had rather a long-term case on Christy. We had one date, in our senior year: I brought her to our Third Ward Sacrament Meeting. Her father disapproved of our further association. She would later join the Church and marry Fred Elliott (deceased in 2010). She remains a treasured friend. |
