Upstairs from the County Clerk’s office, and at his marvelously fruitful suggestion, we found the Surrogate’s Office, where we retrieved and photographed the records of Grandpa Oliver Wheeler’s probate, including his will and this little advertisement, which broke down a major brick wall and cast much light on the pathetic state of communications in the extended Wheeler household:

A very great deal of foolishness had been published, mainly in Utah, about Grandma Harriet’s sister Caroline. Following up on this perfectly Providential find, I was enabled to trace and reassemble her dramatic story and to make contact with a collaboratively-inclined cousin in Livingston County, Michigan, who put much flesh on this chapter of our family history.

Before the end of the year, the Section I’ve entitled “Caroline” was ready to add to this record, although it’s undergone revision since.
