The Reverend Thomas Hooker, first preacher in The
New Towne that would become Cambridge, Massachusetts, and founder of Hartford and, arguably, of Connecticut, was my eighth great-grandfather. I honor his memory and boggle at his adventurous pioneer story in England, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
The Ancient Center Church Burying Ground in the heart of Hartford contains his gravestone (although perhaps not his bones—it’s a bit of a long story) and features this obelisk inscribed with the names of the heads of the congregant families who came with Hooker down the Old Connecticut Path in 1636. I had to put the other two sides of the monument on the next page. |
