On Sunday, I went “backstage” to use the campground’s little-boy facility. Two unplanned encounters:
  • Ralph Stanley, just about ready to come on stage. You don’t notice it in the pictures, but this giant of the arts stands well under five feet tall. No significance; just a bit of a startle.

  • Ron Thomason, struggling with his crutches. I offer to carry his mandolin case. He thanks me kindly but allows as how he’s the only one to whom he grants that privilege.
