Key Club
Key Club is a way of life!” Or at least so said Del Riddle in his well-traveled stump speech. Del was Governor of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Key Clubs for 1955-56, his senior year at Pacific. Also drum major in the PHS Band. Also my temporary foster brother and LDS convert who was baptized while he lived with us, that memorable year.

Key Club, as you might already know, is sorta Junior Kiwanis, the high-school version of the international men’s service organization, like Rotary or Lions. The San Bernardino chapter of Kiwanis International was our sponsoring club within the parent organization, and, from time to time, its members would invite some of us Key Clubbers to come as guests to their dinner.

It was mainly existing social connections that hooked me up with Key Club. As far as I recall, I joined without any particularly consuming thought of résumé-enhancement. The next three pages display the group photos that appeared in Pacific’s yearbook (the Pacificana) for the three years I was there.

*When it was my turn, a Kiwanian named Milo Philbin would seldom miss the chance to “fine” me for an incident from several years earlier. Mr Philbin, you see, was the veteran Assistant Principal / Dean of Boys at Arrowview Junior High. I came up (down?) with a queasy stomach, one day, and obtained permission from my teacher to go the the Assistant Principal’s office. Where I bellied up to his paper-laden desk and blurted, “Mr Philbin, Mr Philbin, I…oooolp.” All over the desk. To his credit, he maintained his composure, only suggesting, mildly, that it would be a kindness on my part to aim for the wastebasket, next time.
