1997—CoMMensa

In case you were wondering what we did at CoMMensa, Inc., and at Phase V Technologies, Inc., before that, here’s one of the slides I showed at an annual convention of the Drug Information Association.1

We were comparing Captopril (Squibb) and Enalapril (Merck), two closely-related and competing drugs that doctors use to lower patients’ blood pressure. Squibb hired us on the strength of anecdotal evidence that their drug left its patients feeling better than their competitor’s did. Put crudely, this graph2 says that sick folks (low General Perceived Health) got feeling better while taking captopril, whereas those who were already healthy (high GPH) came to feel worse while taking enalapril.
1Perhaps in Charleston, or in San Diego, or in New York, or at Myrtle Beach, or at New Orleans—they were at pains to put these big conventions in interesting places. If I live long enough, I’ll add some material about our corporate mission, clients, and publications. If I don’t, you’ll have to Google for anything of that sort that may arouse your curiosity.
2It may not come as a surprise that we never got any business from Merck, after we published these data. There is no truth to the rumor that minions of Merck plotted to bomb our headquarters, either in Wellesley or in Timbaloo.
