Valerie as “Mission Mother”
I thought I had a picture of Valerie in the pulpit, speaking at a district conference. When it shows up, (unless I’ve hallucinated it) I’ll insert it. Her French was rather rudimentary, gained mainly some years earlier, from a couple of classes she took under Pappy at Valley College. And of course by transcribing my missionary journal, although that didn’t help much with the speaking end of it. She’d write out her discours in English; I’d translate and type it double-spaced. We’d then go over it together, and she’d interlineate phonetic transliterations, as she thought she’d need them. They loved it. They loved her.
Not quite sure when I scribbled the upside-down notes au verso, nor when I used them. At some leadership gathering, apparently. Intended to help brethren who ran meetings to avoid disappointment and embarrassment. An indication of the rôle Pappy intended me to play.
