Valerie as “Mission Mother”
Valerie describes her contribution dismissively: “All I did was tend little boys and wash white shirts.” That’s her modesty talking. She filled some pretty unfillable shoes with sweetness, poise, and diligence, as anybody who knows (except herself) will tell you. As I said then and still think now, seldom has a person with such small feet as our Mammy’s left such big shoes to fill.
As other segments of this account will make clear, she was a featured speaker, often in French, at conferences of members and missionaries in France and Spain. On those trips, she took part in our historical and gastronomic explorations and helped create a lot of memories we still cherish.

You’ll note that Pappy assigned her the rôle of “Supervisor of Mission Auxiliaries.”—an interesting title that would soon no longer make sense. She told the afternoon general session of the Le Mans District Conference in December about Father Abraham’s example of service and obedience:
