Well, not exactly the press, but certainly public. Guess they didn’t have room for “Richard.” Or maybe Doctor Bailey dictated it… Yes, he always called me “Dick.” Never by my preference, but then I’m not sure he ever asked. Those who asked, learned that I preferred “Richard,” in those days. Pappy was “Andy” to his close friends and colleagues: Roger Anton, Bill Brenizer, Ellis Spackman—especially the ones he occasionally played tennis with. Never to Mammy. Nor, as far as I remember, to any of his Church associates. I would presume to appropriate the cognomen only in college, after moving out of the family nest. I’m still “Richard,” to Valerie, a couple of decades into the twenty-first century. She, of course, can call me whatever she pleases. I’ll come, gladly. |
