Bank of America Semifinals
As the letter says, each of the four groups of seven semifinalists gathered at San Bernardino Valley College on April 17. After an hour-long “group discussion,” a panel of judges chose a first, second, and third-place winner in each category. Each first-place winner joined six others from the other Zones as finalists.
It was an interesting public-speaking experience, the first time I can recall being coached to interrupt my peers in an aggressive but civilized fashion. Not very consistent with my upbringing.

In the Fine Arts session, they asked me how come I’d entered the competition in that area, rather than in my major field of Science and Mathematics. I said I assumed they wanted well-rounded scholars. Which seemed to satisfy them. Actually, it hadn’t been my decision, as far as I recall. It’s not hard to discern Doctor Bailey’s fine strategic hand in our positioning.
