On the Steps |
We fellow-fossils had schmoozed for a couple of days ahead of Commencement and here gathered on the steps of Walker Memorial to marvel that so many of us had lasted so long.
Most of us sprang for the scarlet jackets, which they said with straight faces we should wear with “our freshman ties”. “They” must’ve been frat-rats: I’d be amazed if such an adornment existed among my fellow East Composters in the Class of ’62. Fortunately, the tailor in Acton who supplied the jackets was also prepared to sell us the means to impersonate the freshmen we once were. I thought about offering a prize (maybe some mimeographed pages from Uno Ingard’s Physics 8.01 for 1958) to anybody who can confidently identify me in this crowd. Trust me, though: I’m there. Far left (how’s that for my politics?), second row from the back. |
