Then we visited in the home of Barney Klimeck and his wife (whose name I regret to have misplaced), and after comparing notes about the original Freedom Branch, Barney kindly took us on a tour to the area where that congregation apparently met. Back in the 1830s, they called it Fish Lake; now it’s Crystal Lake, one of the recreational attractions of the “Enchanted Mountains.” |

In case you’re wondering why we’d be particularly interested in this obscure geographical feature, I’ll cite a summary I sent later to my esteemed cousin, Landes Shepard, who wondered: |
My best guess would be that the baptisms in Freedom happened in Fish Lake, as they called it in those days … For confirmation, let me refer you to the historical pages I sent a couple of weeks ago… On p 390, the historian lists the “principal water-courses,” naming first Clear Creek and Fish Lake.
