2004—Betty & The Birthplace |
Can’t say I remember exactly how it came up, but we were singing with the Utah Sacred Harp group and chatting with Betty Chamberlin, one of its most distinguished trebles, when we learned that Betty lives in East Mill Creek, where, in 1899, Grandpa
A. M. Seely built (on land that Grandma Alfaretta Neff Seely had inherited from her father, Franklin Neff) the home in which my Mammy and three of her siblings were born. Further discussion revealed that Betty’s grandfather had purchased that very home from the Seelys in 1907 or thereabouts, when they moved to
Rosette. And, to our joy, that Betty is the current proprietor and occupant of Mammy’s birthplace.
Betty invited us over to get acquainted with the place. And six years later, she very kindly accommodated our friends and relatives at a centenary celebration on Mammy’s hundredth birthday. |
