2003—Winter: Ralston Kids in Kaysville

As our first year in Utah blustered to its end, the customary snow delighted the younger residents. We old folks rejoiced in its accumulation1 on the Wasatch Range, to the east of us, and on Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake, to the west. Relieved, by and large, of outdoor duties and temptations, we settled with some contentment into the sedentary2 part of the year.
1Yes, I know that it’s conventional to admire those Brobdingnagian piles of dirt and scrubby vegetation that surround us, but Valerie and I agree that they look nicer with some frosting.
2I had accumulated 3000 miles on Hepzibah in 2003, despite missing desperately the verdant variety of New England. And between 3000 and 3300 each year from 2002 through 2009, except for 2004. Not until the completion of my allotted threescore-and-tem did the requisite endurance tank definitively …
