You know everybody in this kitchen shot, except for “Superman,” in the middle. That’s Joey Goldberg, son of my Abt Associate Dr. Judy Goldberg. Valerie provided home day care for Joey for some years, starting shortly after his birth. In case you were wondering how we managed to stay as nearly solvent as we did, with kids in college, and all.

Down at Abt Associates headquarters on Wheeler Street, in Cambridge, I was in Judy’s office one day and noticed a framed diploma on the wall. Knowing that she had earned a Ph.D., I assumed that the document reflected that achievement. On closer inspection, though, it turned out to be her junior high school graduation certificate.
