1973: Christmas |
She wanted a cradle for her doll. So I designed and constructed this one—surreptitiously—in the basement. Blue, to match her eyes, and Chris’.1 Valerie chose the bear-decals.
Can’t remember the details, but there was a story around about a treasured cradle that hadn’t been sturdy enough for the burdens that its young proprietors called upon it to bear; so, I made this one out of ¾-inch pine, with the strongest joints I’d yet learned to fashion. She was thrilled, as you may discern. The cradle still serves her kids, in New Jersey. 1On that account, I’ve always referred to the two of them as our “twins.” Hasn’t caught on much with anybody else, though they’ll sometimes invoke it. |
