On this visit, we didn’t always travel around in the splendor of the President’s Citroën. Sometimes our conveyance was the humbler but very capacious missionary casserole: a Volkswagen bus. At this remove, I really can’t say whether that name originated with missionaries or whether we learned it from the French. It did serve as a durable sobriquet for these largely beloved vehicles, which were first introduced as district cars while I was in Rennes.
Two observations about this shot. Valerie may wish to correct me, but I believe I remember gently holding our kids’ eyelids shut, to help them go to sleep. We see Rick combining this gesture with his typical thumb-sucking. Not sure whether that was what amused his mother, or if it was perhaps his semi-standing posture.
