Tom Lehrer |
Technique noted the devotion of the
East
Compost hacking set to the works of this celebrated artist. Yes, we did
broadcast Lehrer’s “We Will All Burn Together When We Burn”
through
enormous speakers during a fire drill. We also blocked stairwells and
set off titanium-tetrachloride smoke bombs in entranceways. To the
considerable distress of Uri Toomre’s JudComm, B&P (Building and
Power, now officially Physical Plant), and everybody who
disapproved of us in knee-jerk fashion.
We wearied, you see, of the frequency and inconvenient
scheduling of such bureaucratically-dictated events…
In these days, Tom Lehrer was still teaching the odd math course at MIT and Harvard. I regret that I never enrolled in one. Jacquie Bruce (of Barstow and Wellesley) and I occupied front-row-center seats in Kresge. Heard only one item that Lehrer hadn’t previously recorded (commercially, at least): his MTA song: “H is for my alma mater, Hahhhhvahhd…” Only date Jacquie and I ever had. Had met her at the Bank of America awards dinner, the year before. |
