Summer School
Then as now, summer school was mainly remedial. By the end of my first (sophomore) year at Pacific, however, my mentors saw that I wasn’t going to be able to cram into the regular school year all that they wanted to put in my résumé. You won’t see any “Study Hall” entries on my report cards. Yes, “Lunch” got a grade (always an A, for me: I was always a real good eater). But no study halls.

If I recall correctly, it was a matter of having to do the required U. S. History course in the summer, if I wanted to stay in Band all three years. In those days before air conditioning, I remember, fuzzily, a rather low-key summer-school experience. Even came tardy, once. For the life of me, I can’t credit this course with any significant rôle in kicking off my life-long fascination with the subject. Nor, to my shame, do I even recall whether the teacher was Mr, Mrs, or Miss Ludwig.

The card says “Pacific,” presumably because that was my school. I actually attended these classes across town at Berdoo High. The only time I really spent any time there.
