Christmas Greetings, 1954-55
Not sure of the connection between our respective Scout uniforms and the delivering of presents. Via Marilyn, if I’m not mistaken.

One thing you’ll seek in vain in these pages is anything about my activity in the Scout program. In our congregation, the whole program of extra-ecclesiastical activities for teenage boys (euphemized officially as “Young Men”) seemed to me to entail very little more than dancing and basketball, neither of which appealed to me at all. Scouting, under Colonel Leith Marcum from Norton Air Force Base, amounted to close-order drill in the Church parking lot. I opted out, and the folks were wise enough not to hassle me about it. I think I made the exalted rank of First Class Scout, but certainly no more than that.
For all that, some of the men I’ve most admired have been Scout leaders, down through the years.

I’d taken up the clarinet in sixth grade; Brent followed suit, around this time. Neither of us ever set the musical world on fire, but these school involvements introduced us to group music-making, which has been a substantial blessing in both of our lives.
