Lantana |

| Covering the Tjossems’ fence in the late-middle Fifties, a luxuriant accretion of a shrubby/viny growth called lantana, fairly common in the area. Little purple flowers and a very pungent odor when bruised (or weeded). Not unattractive, I guess, but I remember disliking the smell and considering the stuff a pest nearly on a par with Bermuda grass (we called it “devil grass”) among California’s stubborn weeds. |  |

who lived with us while her parents (Colonel Silas and Helen Chipman
Richards) were on an Air Force assignment in Izmir, Turkey. She had
high school to finish and wanted to do it at home.
