Tjossems’
Mammy & Brent
Behind Mammy and Brent here, we get a partial view of the the home of our dear neighbors to the east, Harold and Nadine Tjossem (pronounced JOSS-um). Also the home of Nadine’s mother, Mrs Marie Schreiber, and of their spoiled-rotten, eternally-yapping, wire-haired terrier “Judith Ann Tjossem.”1 Note the substantial picket fence that enabled us to remain friendly neighbors, despite the deplorable Judy. Pity it wasn’t also soundproof.
Harold and Nadine had a television some years before we did. I’d hang around our side of their fence until they’d take pity on me and invite me over to watch the fights. Didn’t know much about the sweet science. Still don’t. But there was something impressive about Joe Louis and Ezzard Charles pounding on each other on a round, nine-inch, black-and-white screen. Couldn’t come right out and ask for an invitation, of course; that would’ve led to big trouble at home.

1The dog from which I learned enduringly to dislike dogs. For which character flaw my beloved Oophie (Aunt Ruth Eloese Anderson Dunaway) is sure I’ll have to account on Judgment Day. I don’t think she’ll testify on my behalf…
