Here is Worthen’s map of “Early Settlers,” superimposed on a topographical map1 of present-day Lexington. Before we do more with these maps, please just notice how very closely the two coincide. Worthen drew his by hand circa 1924, but it matches the newer map, constructed with all sorts of modern technology unavailable to him. Worthen
I make a point of this correspondence, partly out of sheer admiration for Worthen’s achievement, partly to observe that much hasn’t changed in 350 years, and partly because I’ll want to take seriously some of Worthen’s assertions about locations.
