Mitt Romney: the Swaine Article
In violent contrast to Jessica Ravitz’ professionalism, I’m embarrassed to report the incident, only weeks later, of my interview with one Jon Swaine and what followed rapidly thereafter.

Before launching into this, I’ll just cite Isaiah, who (29:21) castigates those…
that make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought…
I must confess, regretfully, to having responded to Jon Swaine’s request for an interview. In our conversation, I particularly wish I could take back one word: I referred to the Mission Home in Paris as a “palace”. I guess Swaine could be forgiven for failing to understand that I spoke from the point of view of a schoolteacher’s kid who’d encountered such accommodations before only as a tourist…

It all hit the fan with a message from the wife of an old fellow missionary, accusing me of a low-class attack on Mitt and his candidacy:
… What are you trying to do ? Destroy one of the best candidates we have in the Republican party ? Are you then one of those liberals or what else will be your motive ?…
As it turned out, Swaine had quoted me on the “palace” bit in his article for a London paper, and then Newsmax had picked it up and distorted the whole thing badly.

She’s forgiven me now, after a flurry of e-mails from and among various old friends. If you care to see the transcript, I’ve put a copy, hesitantly, at:

As everybody knows, Mitt lost that election. I don’t think it was my fault. And I do agree with Lucette that the country and the world would have been better off if he had won.
