Martin’s Cove |
Martin’s Cove, Wyoming U.S. National Register of Historic Places |
Esteemed cousin, family history collaborator, sorta co-author, and friend Landes Shepard and his Elaine had invited us to stop at Martin’s Cove on our way home from Keokuk. Between school years, the Shepards serve as historical missionaries in the visitors’ center there, where our Uncles Charlie Decker and Ephraim Hanks sparkplugged the heroic and miraculous rescue of the Martin handcart emigrant company, which had started out to cross the plains too late in the year and had run afoul of winter weather.
We got a VIP tour of the area, much less strenuous than many youth groups from Western congregations encounter in annual “Trek” reenactments of the scary episode. Then Lan and Elaine took us to the trailer they inhabit in season and shared a lovely salmon and fine fellowship. |
