A cold, sad day in Sandy. Our old Stake President, now high-ranking Apostle,
L Tom Perry was on hand to preach
our old friend’s funeral sermon. Many kind words, including a special appreciation of Bert’s support as his first Stake Executive Secretary in Boston. I mentioned to him afterward that I’d been Bert’s first Ward Executive Secretary, back in 1964 or thereabouts, when the office was invented.
When the letter came from Salt Lake, defining the Executive Secretary’s duties, I’d been serving as Assistant Ward Clerk for Home Teaching (again). Bishop Bert read the letter and said, ”Dick, this looks pretty much like what you’re doing already…” |
