2005—Sandisfield/Colebrook |
Only days after I’d left my really delightful new friends in Sandisfield, Norton wrote that he’d located my elusive Grandpa Daniel Hurd’s grave. One of the patriotic registers had placed him in the “Beach Plain” burying ground in Sandisfield, but I’d discounted that as a misreading of Beech Hill in Colebrook. But then Norton lives on Beech (not Beach1) Plain Road, and it does indeed possess a cemetery, several miles away, at the far north end of Sandisfield. So Norton schlepped himself up there, found and photographed the stones of Daniel and Rebecca Hurd, and mailed me the photos. |

I thanked him, of course, and formed a firm resolve to penetrate further into Grandpa Daniel’s story, if I should be spared to return to his country.
The shorter stone next to Grandpa’s holds even more significance to us. Norton’s photos don’t make the inscriptions very clear, but Grandma Rebecca Smith Hurd lies next to Daniel, and she’s the first ancestor who carries all of our Mayflower heritage. We made plans to capture clearer images of these pivotal monuments, when we should next visit, or at least to ascertain and transcribe the funerary texts. 1Beech trees predominate majestically in the landlocked Berkshire region; not so beaches, which tend to seek out the borders of big bodies of water. |
