2001—June: Strawberry Park |
The first weekend in June, we drove down to Preston, Connecticut, to take part in the Strawberry Park Bluegrass Festival. The main attraction for us was the Dry Branch Fire Squad, pictured here at the very end of a Civil War number (perhaps “Faded Coat of Blue”), on Saturday evening.
I’d fallen in love with them at the Berkshire Festival, twenty years earlier, through the kindly offices of then-high-schooler Rick. My account of that occasion also relates the story of Valerie’s subsequent conversion, similar to mine. Dry Branch, in case you didn’t know, is really the brilliant Ron Thomason (on mandolin, saluting, second from left, in the photo). And vice versa. Except for him, the personae have turned over several times, in the intervening decades. |
