| In counseling groups of Cambridge graduate students, Bert van Uitert often used me as an example of getting one’s academic requirements out of the way: he wanted to light a fire under a number of “professional grad students,” who tended to drag out their doctoral research projects. Bert would urge them not to make a career of their dissertations. |
