Abstract

Dave was kind enough to compliment my abstract; so, here it is. Correct me, though, Dave: isn’t the function of an abstract to be “mercilessly short”? Sorta like this page?

In counseling groups of Cambridge graduate students, Bert van Uitert often used me as an example of getting one’s academic requirements out of the way: he wanted to light a fire under a number of “professional grad students,” who tended to drag out their doctoral research projects. Bert would urge them not to make a career of their dissertations.
