As I laid the final thesis in Fletcher’s, Dick’s, and Dave’s in-boxes and entrusted a fourth copy to the extramural courier system for Jay, I recall verbalizing almost immediately a feeling akin to that of widowhood: for the first time in recent memory, I could dandle my offspring without having to fight off a feeling that I was neglecting my duty.

They loved it, thanks be to God! Dave Tiedeman’s comments were the most concise; so, I’ll share them with you here.

It may have occurred to you to wonder about that title. Yes, I came in for some good-natured ribbing anent its length. Neither then nor now, though, have I been able to come up with an adequately-informative alternative.
