Appendix: Rennes
3571fewRennes.jpg Valerie and I did participate in my old home district’s December conference, held in Rennes: she spoke very bravely in the afternoon general session, and I addressed a leadership group on Saturday, just before the general festivities analogous to these. I harangued them on the new administrative changes, of course: that was my assignment.
Two associated events worth mentioning: a brother from Nantes cornered me for clarification of some of my remarks. I’d talked about the family’s rôle in the workings of the Church, and he was concerned that his rather messed-up family situation was going to exclude him from important aspects of Church membership. I think I was able to reassure him.
Then, after the general sessions, my “trois mamans rennaises” engineered a brief, sweet, and tearful reunion. They were tickled to meet Valerie; they’d known all about her, of course, since 1961-62. That was precious.

Rennes was home, of course: not a mere tourist destination, nor even primarily a focus of Church duties in the days I’m talking about now. I said enough about it, I think, in my 1961-64 journal.
