Appendix: Rouen |
Around a thousand years ago, some of our most interesting prominent ancestors, through a quarter of a millennium, owned the city of Rouen and/or lived in it.
Their history and genealogy are involved and confused. Some of the old dukes issued from marriages we’d recognize as such, whereas the mothers of others are described as “mistresses” (known or unknown) or from liaisons sometimes called marriage “Danish-style”.
Normandy as a political entity seems to have started with the Viking Rolf or Rollo who accepted Christian baptism and became Robert I, reigning in Rouen as the first Duke of Normandy 911-931 A. D.1 Our direct ancestors appear in boldface, in the table; the others qualify as uncles or as aunts by marriage or other liaison. |
