Our “Street Entrance”
An about-face, once again, and we see the southeast corner of our space, with Valerie writing letters1 at our wellbeloved multipurpose2 table.

The view (our southern exposure) out that window3 onto what Miss Krauss called “the pahtio” still burgles up wry and tender smiles chez moi. The window extends to the right, but the part you can’t see looks out on a brick wall a foot away.
We’d sit at breakfast and watch the rats play on the bricks. Sometimes they’d put their paws up on our window-screen and twitch their whiskers. The old she-rat with the broken tail had pups in the spring; they were cute.
1On my old 3, rue de Lota violet stationery by Grant Bybee.
2Kitchen, dining room, conference, study—you name it.
3One of my favorite shots ever.
