Arrowview Junior High School — People
Our East Sixteenth Street domicile lay at the far eastern end of the Arrowview district. So, most of my junior-high classmates, including my few friends, went to San Bernardino High School after we shared ninth grade. And so, we saw very little of each other after Arrowview graduation.

Other folks were memorable from Arrowview days, but I haven’t yet uncovered pictures of them. As memory synapses stir from their current dusty repose, I may add to the list. For now, just a few comments:
  • Principal Lonnie R Kimbley : A shock, after the revered Mary E Hughes. And a notable contrast, in retrospect, to Kenneth P Bailey. Not to be gratuitously unkind, but I never heard anybody express admiration for the man. He came across to me as weak, arbitrary, and given to favoritism.

  • Eleanor Rae (“E-Rae”) Kimbley : I suppose she had friends among our classmates, but I wouldn’t count myself among them. Short, curly-blonde, round of face and body, E-Rae thought she could sing, but only those who wanted to get on her father’s good side tended to agree with her…

  • Vice Principal Milo Philbin : A pleasant chap, remembered mostly for one creditable incident and the glee with which he perpetuated its memory.

  • Miss Muriel Krouskup : My first Latin teacher. I thought her very old. Probably a lot older than she was. But then I was very young, and she taught a very old language. She was always very kind to me.

  • Mr Kucera : Taught a California-mandated macédoine-de-légumes course called “Social Living.” Assigned a soap-carving for a project, to my non-artistic chagrin. Had the grace to give an A to an essay I wrote, consigning a pudgy Social Living teacher to a Dante-esque perdition for the crime of assigning a soap-carving…
