Toddling toward the mast
With the war on, and with my uncle Clair (Pappy’s brother) in the Merchant Marine, I frequently sported this sailor suit. The bear was a good buddy. I seem to remember a 1943 Christmas card featuring some version of this saluting photo, but I can’t just now lay my hands on a copy.

By this time, I’ve lost my baby curls to a standard little-boy haircut. Probably to Mammy’s sentimental distress, although she would surely have borne up philosophically.
