The flag and star denote his status as a Revolutionary soldier. I’m not sure what the laurel wreath means; I’ll look into it.

Both Grandpa John and his son Grandpa Appleton Stillman served in the Continental Army as Massachusetts men. As it turns out, though, they’re all buried a few miles away, across the state line in Connecticut.
When the development of Sandisfield spilled over into Connecticut to the south, and land became available in another new community, it appears that John and his sons, particularly Grandpa Appleton and Uncle Robert, became major landowners in Colebrook, Litchfield County.1

I’m planning to gather more specifics about the family’s southward migration the next time I visit. For now, it’s clear that the Stillmans bought heavily into the Colebrook neighborhoods now called Stillman Hill and Beech Hill. With many of their children and later descendants, John and Rachel are buried in the Beech Hill Cemetery on (surprise!) Beech Hill, diagonally across the street (Beech Hill Road) from the site of their son Robert Stillman’s home.
1Not, interestingly enough, as original owners in the 1760 Allocations, but by subsequent purchase. I have, courtesy of Bob Grigg, a splendid map…
