Robert & Zipporah Chappell Stillman |
From the site of Robert and Zipporah Stillman’s house, toward the trees that conceal the Beech Hill Cemetery, this shot looks southeast, diagonally across the T-intersection where Simons Pond Road (at left) ends at Beech Hill Road. Those look like cornerstones in the lawn, at left and right, but I’m not sure.
Bob Grigg tells me that when they tore down the house, they found a large iron ring set in the attic floor, with the floorboards worn thin around it, where some unfortunate crazy person or persons had been tethered. Nobody seems to know whether a family member enjoyed this facility, or whether the prominent Stillmans provided their century’s version of mental health care as a public service to the wider community… |
