2000—Harvard Square Old Burial Ground
Buried Treasures
I’d approach a stone and look it up in the Harris book, which would provide at least as much as one could read, and often more, what with damage and encroachment of soil and vegetation. For prominent people and others whose genealogies Harris knew or thought he knew, his notes gave illuminating supplementary context.

While the book was portable, the map wasn’t, and it could be a challenge to find a stone listed in Harris’ Index. His plot numbers do correspond to the numbers that you can’t read on the map at this magnification. So, I divided my photo of the CHC’s map up into thirteen areas, each of which would print legibly on a legal-sized sheet.

Then it remained to cross-index the plot numbers to the areas, and I finally had a manageable document that I could carry to the Ground and locate any gravestone of interest, if it has survived the centuries. The resulting inventory of blood kin and their spouses first emerged as a separate Section, which I later incorporated into the Section named NewTowne.
