1981—Meanwhile, back at AAI
Abt Microcomputer Software
Even as the extended Follow Through episode soaked up at least my statutory full time, I dived into “my” Apple and learned how to program it. Meanwhile, other computer enthusiasts at Abt Associates were also diverting their alleged spare time into projects that interested them (see the price list)) :
  • a suite of communication apps (though “app” wouldn’t become a word for a couple of decades), through which computers, big and little, could talk to each other over phone lines, via modems
  • an early predecessor of modern spreadsheet programs, and
  • various games and simulations, building upon a founding capability and focus of the Company.
SampleCalc Meanwhile, I undertook to automate the sample-design procedures that had been my bread and butter since 1968. By the time Clark began to see the microcomputer field as a potential profit center, I had produced SampleCalc, “a convenient and powerful development and instructional tool for surveys. experiments and statistical analysis…based upon Jacob Cohen’s classic work, Statistical Power Analysis for the Behavioral Sciences, published by Academic Press (New York, 1977),” as its marketing blurb proclaimed.

You may notice a familiar name in the by-line.
