Not much to report from our second transcontinental déménagement, about fourteen months into our official partnership. On our Pappy’s kindly behalf, we took delivery of Gaby, his third Renault automobile and his second 6CV (six-chevaux) and drove it across the country. We didn’t have a lot of time before we had to be in Palo Alto. Valerie was also gorgeous in the sixth month of our first pregnancy. I don’t recall that her “condition”1 caused us any delay, nor that she complained of any overwhelming discomfort. But urgency did constrain this trip more than others we’ve taken.

We did make a few “Mormon” history stops. At this distance, one can only barely discern Valerie’s honorable convexity beside that of the Hill Cumorah.
1I hear that some people practice polygamy for the sake of variety in marriage. I count it a blessing to have enjoyed wondrous variation within the bounds of a marvelous monogamy. Over the years, we experienced eight pregnancies together. Each had its personality and its story, and I plan to bring each into this narrative as its chronology will motivate. For the moment, let me just characterize them as happy times (with punctuation and inflections) and to note that each time, I found myself married to a different, delightful person. I generally knew Valerie was pregnant before she or her doctors did, although she still won’t admit it.
